The environmental conversation around façades often begins with embodied carbon. That matters, but it is only part of the picture.
Replacement has its own environmental cost
A façade that performs for decades, remains visually acceptable, can be maintained and avoids premature replacement may deliver a better whole-life outcome than one selected only because its initial carbon figure appears lower.
Replacement carries consequences: removal, waste, transport, new materials, new fixings, access equipment, labour and disruption. Those impacts are easily overlooked at design stage because they sit years in the future.
Durability is therefore not separate from sustainability — it is one of its foundations.
Questions beyond “what is this made from?”
✅ How will it weather?
✅ Can damaged areas be replaced locally?
✅ Are fixings and subframes designed for the expected service life?
✅ What maintenance will be required?
✅ Will the appearance age with dignity?
✅ Is the system likely to remain available and supportable?
A different question to start from
The greenest façade is not always the newest material or the one with the strongest environmental claim. Sometimes it is the façade that continues doing its job — safely, efficiently and attractively — long after the original project team has moved on.
Whole-life thinking changes the specification conversation from “what does it cost today?” to “how well will it serve the building over time?”
