What a complete specification defines
A complete specification defines the performance that the assembled system must achieve and the conditions under which it must do so. That includes the facing material, subframe, fixings, cavity, insulation interfaces, fire barriers, joints, support conditions and installation requirements.
Credentials aren't the whole story
A product can have excellent individual credentials and still be unsuitable for a particular building geometry, exposure, fixing method or fire strategy. Equally, a familiar material can perform well when it is correctly configured as part of a tested and coordinated system.
Beyond "which panel do we want?"
Good specification asks more. It asks:
✅ What reaction-to-fire and system evidence is required?
✅ What wind loads and spans must be accommodated?
✅ What cavity depth and adjustment are needed?
✅ How will movement and tolerances be managed?
✅ What are the maintenance and replacement expectations?
✅ Which interfaces remain the responsibility of other packages?
✅ What substitutions, if any, would be genuinely equivalent?
Keeping intent and performance aligned
The specification should preserve design intent while making performance expectations clear enough to price, coordinate and deliver. This is why named products, performance clauses and drawings must support one another — none of them is sufficient in isolation.
