Environmental Product Declarations are appearing more often in specifications, but they are still sometimes treated as environmental certificates or simple product ratings. They are neither.

What an EPD actually is

An EPD is a standardised document that reports the environmental impacts associated with a product across defined stages of its life cycle. Depending on the declaration, this can include raw material extraction, manufacturing, transport, installation, use and end-of-life.

The important point is that an EPD provides data. It does not automatically mean a product is sustainable, low-carbon or preferable to another option. It gives the design team a consistent basis for comparison — provided the declarations being compared use compatible standards, product categories, system boundaries and declared units.

Five questions to ask when reading an EPD

For façade materials specifically, it's worth checking:

✅ Is the EPD product-specific or based on an industry average?
✅ Which life-cycle modules are included?
✅ What service life has been assumed?
✅ Does the declared unit allow a fair comparison?
✅ Is the document independently verified and still valid?

Evidence, not a substitute for judgement

An EPD is best understood as evidence within a wider specification process. It should sit alongside fire performance, durability, maintenance, technical suitability, responsible sourcing and whole-life design.

Used properly, EPDs help architects move beyond broad environmental claims and ask better, more precise questions about the materials being specified.
